Introduction
It has been a tough and turbulent year for trans youth in particular, but recently two big announcements happened on June 18th. The first was the Supreme Court upholding the hormone ban in Tennessee and the second was the announcement of the 988 suicide prevention and crisis lifeline dropping their LGBTQ+ service number. This page exists to help center what happened for both of these stories in more detail, provide meaningful resources, and calls to action to inspire hope.

What's Still at Stake Just because these two events don't increase harm that much by themselves, what they do is anchor a tremendous amount of trauma and social anxiety many LGBTQ+ individuals and youth experienced before these decisions and will experience to greater degrees after them.

988 LGBTQ+ Line to be Dropped
Response - Trevor Project
The Bad - The LGBTQ+ line under 988 will be non-operational effective July 17th. This serves to significantly reduce the operational funding and collaborative partnerships Trevor Project had with 988 services.
The Neutral: 988 in North Dakota is answered by FirstLink and integrated with 211 help directory services. FirstLink is better suited to connect local individuals to local resources. Their staff is LGBTQ+ competent and includes LGBTQ+ people.
Quote - “We received official notice that the Trump administration has ordered the closure of The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline’s LGBTQ+ Youth Specialized Services program, effective July 17, 2025. This means that, in 30 short days, this program that has provided life-saving services to more than 1.3 million LGBTQ+ young people will no longer be available for those who need it." Jaymes Black, CEO of The Trevor Project

United States v. Skrmetti

The Bad - Supreme Court allows discriminating based on treatment of gender dysphoria, upholding state bans and likely weakening other similar lawsuits chance of success.
The Neutral - Supreme Court does not weigh the merit of trans individuals as a class nor does this ruling impact virtually anything else. Many legal cases where trans individuals have won, remain unchanged.
Quote - "Tennessee’s law expressly classifies on the basis of sex and transgender status, so the Constitution and settled precedent require the Court to subject it to intermediate scrutiny. The majority contorts logic and precedent to say otherwise, inexplicably declaring it must uphold Tennessee’s categorical ban on lifesaving medical treatment so long as “‘any reasonably conceivable state of facts’” might justify it. Ante, at 21. Thus, the majority subjects a law that plainly discriminates on the basis of sex to mere rational-basis review. By retreating from meaningful judicial review exactly where it matters most, the Court abandons transgender children and their families to political whims. In sadness, I dissent.” Justice Sotomayor.
