Queering Institutional Ethnography: Designing a Conceptual Framework for Equity

This study is being conducted by: Kelley Larson, Graduate Student [email protected]
Dr. Laura Parson (PI/Advisor) [email protected]

Key Information about this study:
This consent form is designed to inform you about the study you are being asked to participate in. Here
you will find a brief summary about the study; however, you can find more detailed information later on
in the form.

The purpose of this investigation is to find better ways to support and include LGBTQIA+ students in schools. The research aims to understand the specific challenges these students face, such as feeling left out or misunderstood because of their gender or sexual identity. This information should include:
  • There is a risk of minimal discomfort as you will be asked to have a conversation withyour 5th-12 th -grade child about their daily lives and their frustrations surrounding gender identity in school.
  • The benefits to you are none, but long-term benefits to society are possible. The research has the potential to create a more inclusive and supportive society, benefiting not just LGBTQIA+ youth but everyone by promoting understanding, respect, and equality
  • There is no compensation
  • I will ask you to interview with your student as a support person to discuss their average day at school. This will take an hour of your time. I may ask for a follow-up interview if you are willing. Additionally, I may ask your child/youth to serve on a student advisory board that will meet via Zoom twice during the study period.
I emphasize confidentiality in the interview process, recognizing it as my top priority. I will use pseudonyms instead of real names, maintain data security in a secure digital location accessed by the research team. Research findings will not include any personal information or potential identifiers when disseminated. I will always address participant concerns, as they are welcome anytime. You have the right to refuse to answer any question or provide any clarification you do not feel comfortable
discussing. You have the right to withdraw at any time without fear of retaliation

I have also compiled a list of resources for families of LGBTQIA2S+ and youth that I can provide to you
on an as-needed basis.
