The stories of FM PRide
Trans joy at Pride
This was my 4th pride ever, but my first time experiencing Fargo-Moorhead Pride. Growing up in small conservative towns my whole life, I was terrified to be openly queer and trans. At pride I got to walk around in public for the first time after top surgery and didn't have a single fear of being attacked or harassed.
I was given nothing but compliments, both on my scars, transition journey, and my outfit. I've never been so confident and happy in public ever.
Hearing the trans kids at Pride in the Park and during the parade admiring my visible scars gave me hope. It gave me hope that they'd continue to survive like I did and they'd make it to where I am and be free.
Pride events bring a sense of belonging and community that you don't experience everywhere. It was warm, it was inviting, and it was such a self esteem boost.
I grew up thinking I would never be accepted and that my state would never recognize me for who I am. But Fargo-Moorhead over the weekend proved to me that there is acceptance for trans people in this state.
There is hope for us. We deserve to be happy and confident in our bodies. I hope with every pride there is larger attendance, and even more kids see that we can be happy and we aren't monsters.
This is our home too, and we do belong. You just need to find that community and embrace it

a furry's journey through pride
I came down Thursday (8/8) running off of just 2.5 hours of sleep (queer people don't sleep. that's why coffeehouses are so queercore -- it's cuz we live off caffeine). After dropping my suitcase off at my friend Caleb's house (with whom I stayed), I went to the West Acres mall to primarily go shopping for some dress pants for my new paraprofessional job, and secondarily to meet up with people from the Red River Valley Furry group that I was planning to walk with in the parade. One person, a pup named Zephyr, showed up and we walked around a few other clothing stores and Best Buy for a little bit, talking about tech and life and such. Afterwards, I went back to my friend Caleb's place and relaxed a little, falling asleep while reading a book.
The next morning, Caleb and I went to go get breakfast and walked to a park to eat. Throughout the day, I debated going to the All-Ages Drag Show and ended up not going, as I was still feeling tired and was worried about getting overstimulated. Caleb went, though, and told me about it when he got home.
Then, on Saturday, Zephyr picked Caleb and I up to go to Pride in the Park. It took a little bit to find the Red River Valley Furry (RRVF) group, but eventually we found it and settled down, hanging out with fursuiters, pups, and people alike. I had my pup hood on the majority of the day, donning my glasses on it as well. I've learned that for some reason it takes a whole lot longer to get overstimulated in my pup hood if I can see, and I think wearing glasses on my pup hood looked pretty gas :).
One of the furs, Oakley, is known for two things: his ducks and balls. Considering ducks, he had hid them all over our booth and the booth of one of the RRVF leaders, Lola, next door. And when I say balls, I mean *beach* balls. He had two at this event, a small one, and then he also blew up a giant one that captured all of our attentions immediately. We played with it throughout the event; "kneading" it, hitting it up and down, rolling it, and tossing it at each other to play catch. It was very entertaining and fun.
Aside from the giant beach ball attraction, the RRVF table had places to sit, coloring sheets to color, and crayons to color with, courtesy of Ajax Starlight (who was also instrumental in organizing the group for all of pride weekend). There was also a rainbow wall available for picture purposes. I sat there and colored until one of my boyfriends, Brandon, showed up. After I finished coloring we walked the park and got some food.
We took a lot of pictures nearing the end of Pride in the Park. One with all of the fursuiters together, one with all of the hooded pups together, and then at the very end we all went to the Pride sign and took a giant all-call photo. Even the giant beach ball was included. After the big photo, we took a few pictures of chasing Lola around with the beach ball, which was really fun(ny). And even though it was sad having to deflate it, a mini-furpile was made doing so, which made it a little less unfortunate.
I went back up to Grand Forks for a couple hours with Brandon to cool off and recuperate some of my energy, and then we headed back down with our partner, Myka, who's a drag queen as well, as he was performing at a drag brunch in the morning, which Brandon and I went to and supported, of course. Unfortunately, the venue didn't have enough $1 bills to trade in $20s for, so I wasn't able to support the queens performing as much as I'd've liked to. After brunch, we headed to a parking garage somewhat nearby the parade start and as we were parking, we saw a car full of furries parking nearby. Though we didn't walk together, as Myka was marching with the FM drag group and wanted to get there a little bit beforehand. We took an (admittedly self-described) iconic picture of us 3 together and then Brandon and I left to go towards the furry group. We marched in the parade, looking pretty awesome while doing it, and had some pictures taken as well! Afterwards, we all hung around and talked a little bit and finally went home. It was an amazing time overall and I loved every minute that I spent with this ultra-accepting and safe group of people.
